entered on 06-MAY-03 The first thing one notices when they look at this book is that it is thin. This is a 64 page volume, whereas the class splat-books have been in the 96 page range. However, they do drop the price from the $19.95 that books like Sword and Fist cost to $14.95 (this still means an increase in cost of about 2.5 center per page). So right off the bat, the book has a (slight) strike against it. The volume opens up with a page of Introduction, What's inside, and that sort of thing. Nicely written and sets your expectations about right for the book. This is a book of NPCs. Chapter I is called Crime and covers typical thugs, pickpockets, burglars, and then dives into some more exotic ideas such as the Halfling Cleanup Crew. Some worked and usable NPCs are shown to illustrate some of the shader sides of fantasy (the Black Marketer is my favorite of those listed, although the Mind Flayer Assassin is a close second). Chapter II is on Religion. Thus, we get a listing of some typical temple guards and wardens, as well as some religious NPC... Priests, Adepts, Druids, Inquisitors and the like. The chapters each follow a similar vein... Chapter III is Mages. Chapter IV is the Law (to counter the Crime Chapter). Chapter V is adventurers (more like whole adventuring groups). Appendix I and II are for quick NPCs (although I don;t think I would ever use these charts) and a look at the Iconics, respectively. The iconics seemed a bit bland in the writups (not nearly the flavor given the other NPCs of the book). THE CONCLUSION Of the splat-books WotC has put out, this one is more geared for the Dungeon Master. In that, I find it useful and well made -- jsut odd that it follows the same style as the more player-oriented books (as opposed to the style of the Book of Challenges). Still, the book rates a '3' by me.
