Wood Elves

Wood Elves live in the forest that sustains and protects them. They love the forest of their birth and are hard pressed to ever leave it. Most wood-elves are distrustful of outsiders and would rather stay to the shadows and watch them than meet them.

Appearance: Elves are lithe of body and elegant in their movements. They are not as strong as other races on Aerde, but compensate for this with deft maneuvers and excellent hand-eye coordination. Their facial features are fine and appear somewhat childlike to humans. Elven ears are pointed and their eyes are upswept and almond shaped. Typical eye colors are yellow, pale blue, pale green and yellow-orange. Hair color tends towards golden yellow, golden brown and a greenish blonde.

Relations: Wood elves tend toward isolationist policies with the other races. Outsiders are not welcome to wander in elven lands. Elves and dwarves do not get along well due to basic differences in which they approach life. Elves and orcs have a mutually hostile view of the other. Elven interactions with humans are best described as neutral. They interact amicably with some humans and hostilely with others. Elves tend toward friendly relations with halflings and gnomes.

Religion: The most common gods for them to worship are Targan, Nylaethia, Horun, and Os. Other deities revered by the elves include Alyhndro, Talina and Urvon.

Wood Elf Lands: Lorlynia is the homeland of the wood elves. There are elves in other kingdoms and locations on Aerde. These tend to be very small communities in sylvan settings or embassies in the capitals.

Languages: The native tongue of the wood elves is Forestal. Bonus languages include Draconic, Gnoll, Gnome, Goblin, Orc and Sylvan.

Racial Modifiers:
-2 Strength, +4 Dexterity, -2 Constitution
Immunity to magic sleep effects, and a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells or effects
Low-Light vision
Weapon Proficiency: Wood Elves receive the Martial Weapon Proficiency feats for the long sword, rapier, long bow and short bow (including composite variants of these bows) as bonus feats.
+2 racial bonus to Listen, Search and Spot checks. An elf who passes within 5 feet of a secret or concealed door is entitled to a Spot check to see if they notice it as if actively searching for it.
Favored Class: Wizard

Nicely done Entropy. Three things: 1)Drop the "wood" from the name. We talked about this awhile back. This enable DMs to use the other variants from the MM easily. Just "Elves" works to descibe them as a whole. 2) Need a reference to magic in their desciption. Something like " Being long lived, elves have had the opportunity to study arcane magic for hundreds of years and have perfected some of the arts into forms unheard of in other cultures." Just something simple to explain why they have a favored class of wizard. 3) Need to include the +2 to perform skills to help relate them to Targan Lithmoor and his musical ways, singing to trees, ect.

Again, nicley done.

If we give them +2 to perform skills, we're breaking with the standard elf values. As a major purpose of our reverting to standard race values as to be standard, is there something else we can do? A racial or regional Feat perhaps?

That breaks "default values", which we already did once,. Is there another way to give mechanics to "elves sing to trees" besides becoming nonstandard again? Perhaps a racial or regional Feat? Having non-standard default races is not a selling point for most people. This one is a minor change, but a change nonetheless.

Also, are all elves more musical than any other race? Or could this be a flavor text inclusion?

-Throwing ideas out...

Targan Lithmoor and his elves are all about the music, it's everywhere in their write-ups. Singing is what he was doing during the March of Evil to save his elves and the forest that caused Galvar to despise him so. He sang the Wall of Thorns into exsitance that protected the elves for so long. The elves sing/perform to revel in their freedom, it's their way of life. They fight the orcs and the goblins to "keep their song alive." Are all elves more musical than any other race? According to our histories and everything that has been written about them or their homeland, yes. It's in their blood, they were created from a leaf and a song. They might not use it, but it's always a part of every elf. No other race mentions music or song in their history that I remember.
As you can tell, I think an important part of "our" elves and should remain. However if everyone thinks it will be a thorn or point of contention in future DMs sides, I will agree to anyone recieving this if they worship Targan Lithmoor as an alternative.

/end rant>

on a side note, what kind of super powers you got Em to edit my message?

Well, I don't remember editing anyone's post, but I'm an Administrator now on EN World. I have a gentleman's agreement with Morrus only to use it in T13K stuff.

Also - asking questions does not mean I was attacking you, your ideas or your position. When ranting I hope you keep that in mind :) If I attacked your position or idea, I'd have said, "Dude, that's stupid" or words to that effect - well, I'm usually more polite than that, but it definitely wouldn't be a question, it'd be a statement. We are a collaborative process, and some questions ought to be expected :) I know I get questioned enough hehe.

Anyways, regarding singing, all that makes sense. Breaking default is what I'm afraid of. Here's an idea that might work for you mechanically -- what if we add a Special to the Perform skill as New Uses for Old Skills or something, and in that, it states that elves with ranks of perform get X racial bonus?

I am all for keeping our races in line with what is in the books. Kognus makes a good point in how intertwined the elves and music are.

How about a bonus to the Perform (Singing) as a racial bonus of +2? This is a very small difference from what is listed. Anyone who CANNOT play in this setting due to that we are better off without.

Sorry if I came across as upset. I wasn't trying to imply that at all. I didn't think you were attacking me or the elves either. I ended it with /end rant because I was long winded and it was a long paragraph.

The remark about editing my post was also supposed to be a joking one. I just noticed that your post was added to mine about the 3 points, figured you were a moderator and was trying to make light of my longwindedness reguarding elves and music.

As to the options, either one works for me. I just want something in there to refect the elves close relation with music and song.
