When I say regaining spells, I mean that, at the beginning of the archery competition, you'll have full spells that will have to last you the entire competition. Then, after the competition is over, you'll get your spells back in time for the duels. And so on. But And characters are healing before every event as well. Otherwise it's hard for a single 6th level character to make it through four CR 6 encounters, and especially in the duels and jousts, characters would be likely to reach the 2nd fight with only 5 or 10 hp. What events do you see spellcasters dominating? In the races, sure, some spells would help, and I'm glad Russ will be handling stuff like Expeditious Retreat, which only gives you increased speed for a minute or two, not long enough to finish the entire race. In archery, true strike might be nice, but even a 6th level sorcerer would only be able to cast it . . . what, 17 shots? Hmm, could be a problem. Russ, you might want to think about that. Maybe rule that archers have to fire three shots in three consecutive rounds. In dueling, most spells wouldn't be too useful, since only self-affecting and touch spells are allowed. In jousting, mage armor and shield will be nifty, and the wizard might buff himself, but ultimately he'll have fewer hit points and a worse attack bonus. Also, even if you do say that spells aren't recovered between events, what's to stop a spellcaster from using all his spells in one event if he's just competing in the one? If spellcasters get their spells back, then they're encouraged to compete in several competitions in just one. If spellcasters don't get their spells back, then only fighter classes would have much reason for competing in multiple events.
