Epic Adventure in DUNGEON #93

Thomasson

First Post
Since many people now have the Epic Level Handbook in hand, I thought I'd drop a quick plug for "The Storm Lord's Keep," the epic-level adventure in the current issue of Dungeon/Polyhedron. Written by James Wyatt, it's a huge, tremendously cool 21st-level adventure.

I know issue #93 hit the stands earlier than the new book was available, so I figured it might have dropped off your radar a bit. This issue is on newsstands for another couple weeks before issue #94 is out. The issue also features three other complete adventures, as well as the revised Dungeon Writer's Guidelines.

Also note that our contact info has changed with our move to Paizo Publishing. Submission proposals can now be emailed to dungeon@paizopublising.com or mailed to:

Now THIS is a good place for a press release! :)

Thanks for the info, Chris! Any chance we can get James to check by and answer a few questions tomorrow or so?

He came, he saw, he posted!

*gasp* A visitation by a holy one! Someone get me a chisel! I want the footprints!

I'd like to suggest that in the future you guys wait until the product is already out before you release support adventures, for the reasons you mention. I hate opening up my new Dungeon (or Dragon) and seeing a bunch of stuff that I can't really use yet because the rules they're based on hasn't been released yet. On the other hand, I would be pleased to see such an adventure after I've have the rules and have had a few weeks to digest them, and would be much more likely to read it that way.

At any rate, I did flip through the adventure a night or two ago, and it looks pretty good, although I haven't had a chance to dive into it.

Thanks for dropping in with the reminder.

i concur with the release schedule. I am all for teasing us with what's to come but the big critter trapped in the globe with NO stats on it really left me with a "Well this is nice, how do i use it?" feeling.

Yes i went out and got the book anyway (for $14 who wouldn't?!?) but in the future please use modules with existing monsters or with monster fully developed for ease of use, especially if it's important to the plotline like that one was.

Regarding timing . . .

The problem with having a bimonthly magazine is that it seems like you're always either two months early or two months late when it comes to hyping a new product release. With the Epic Level Handbook, we figured releasing the adventure early would lend to the anticipation of the product's release (I'd like to think we were partially successful) as well as support the product once it was out. Also, our release schedule is really weird, although not that strange for the publishing industry at large. For example, our July/August issue goes to subscribers in late May and hits newsstands near the first of June. This is just a fact of life in magazine publishing. So it might seem early, but the adventure does appear in the July issue, the month the product was released.

Okay, so that justification is a bit of a stretch. The reality is that I was already re-examining our support policy for just this reason. As an example of the attempted change, we have an adventure scheduled for issue #95 (that's the November/December 2002 issue) in support of a certain vile product releasing in October. So the magazine will hit newsstands just before the book hits the shelves.

This sort of feedback is just the type of information I'm always hungry for. Thanks, everyone! Keep it coming.

As an aside, I'd like to mention that Erik Mona, Jesse Decker, Johnny Wilson, and I will actually be attending Gen Con this year (our attendance was in doubt until just a couple weeks ago). We have a number of cool events planned, including two Dungeon playtests. Our area is in the Wizards of the Coast castle, and we're hoping that we'll be able to get a list of our events posted online sometime in the near future.

I like it early..

I loved getting the epic module a month before the ELH. It takes me about that long to work an adventure into my campaign anyway, and the quality of the adventure along with the hints from the ELH were quite successful at increasing my anticipation for the hardbound.

Good job, says I.
