To reduce the incredible spell DCs of epic spells, you can increase the casting time to minutes or days, spend xp, and so on.
It occurred to me that when wizards create magic items, they also take days to do it, and spend xp. Is their activity equivalent to working an epic spell?
Reverse engineering the process of making a magic item, and rounding off a bit to make the numbers prettier, I developed the following formula:
DC = 35 + L + M/300
DC is the base DC of the epic spell that will create a magic item. L is the minimum caster level (as given in the item description in the DMG), and M is the market value of the item in gp.
I assumed that 5 gp = 1 xp. I assumed also that a sorcerer of level L had maxed out his spellcraft, and was taking 10 to beat the spell DC. This formula is good for items of up to around 100 000 gp value.
Most epic spellcasters would probably prefer to take the epic feat that allows magic items to be made in 1 day per 10 000 gp of cost.
But heck, it is cool for epic wizards to make minor magic items in just a minute or two.
