The two characters that started the campaign where 37th and 36th. It started in 2ed and we used the original epic preview rules to translate to 3ed.  The characters were multiclassed in 2ed and up to around 19/19 before we switched to 3ed. Our DM never had any problem with the higher levels. As the character moved up in level they became involved in the more important power plays. One of the characters (Cleric/Rouge/Divine Agent) is a Count of the Empire and an Archbishop. The other (Arcane Trickster) is the Elemental Lord of Earth (campaign custom template, one for each element) and runs a merchant trading house with offices on several continenets and dimensions. Both are immensely rich but they keep the excess gold out of circulation, don't want to devalue it. The Mage bought two castles and paid in silver pieces from a dragons hoard - the market was so glutted with silver, trading ships were using it as ballast.</blockquote>
