Epic Progression & Prestige Classes

Example: You go to 13th level in Wizard. Then add five levels of Archmage. Then two more of wizard. Now you're 20th level. From that point forward, you utilize the Epic Wizard progression.

Now, what if you go to 13th Wizard. Then add two levels of Archmage. Then, for whatever reason, you go back to Wizard for five levels. Now you're 20th level.

Can you continue to add levels of Archmage as is from the Archmage progression? Or do you have to do some funky mix and match from the normal epic progression (for BAB and saves) and the Archmage progression?

Hmmmm...

Your attack bonuses and save bonuses come from the standard Epic Attack Bonus and Epic Save Bonus. You do not gain additional spells per day. You get the rest of the Archmage abilities like normal, up to 5th level of course.

After hiting 5th level in your Archmage, you would then need to consult your DM about allowing you to continue leveling it. This is because 5 level prestige classes were not designed to continue forever. See page 6, ELH, Behind the Curtain.

Well you progress as an epic character (saves and epic attack bonus) but you still use the normal wizard progression until you are a level 20 wizard. (Kind of a bummer for you, but don't try and tell me that 5 levels of archmage aren't worth more than 1.66 epic bonus feats.)

actually, it's really nice an simple as they have explained. Once you hit 20 character levels the progression is the same for everyone. No need looking in books to see what sort of proggressions this or that class has.

So what you're saying, Tyrrell, is that it IS possible to have a 15th level wizard/15th level cleric who has the actual spell progressions from each class. It's just that his BAB and saves top out at 20th character level and the next ten are based on the Epic progression.

Correct?

Just trying to wrap my head around all of this.

I just wanted to clarify something. I was incorrect here. In the case of the Archmage, you would get two more spells known (not per day!) with each level beyond 5th, as they cast and learn spells just like a wizard.

Tyrrell is correct. For levels previous to the maximum 1st thru 5th, you use the normal spell progression.

Prestige classes who's spell progression is similar to a sorcerer don't get anything at all from leveling beyond their limit in regards to their spells. They have to take a feat for that.

So the BAB and save progression kicks in as soon as you hit 21st CHARACTER level. But the progression of special abilities and spells continues as per the normal class unless you go beyond the normal 20th level for that CLASS?

Looking at the write-ups of the epic FR characters in the ELH, that's what seems right.

Any thoughts?
