Epic Wizard robes

What would happen if a Wizard made himself a nice robe, and then enchanted it with a portal to another plane? Is this possible? Would this make the Wizard unstoppable? Just something I thought might be interesting. He'd probably have to learn how to sleep standing up...

I would think the wizard would have problems when he put it on, like finding himself naked in another dimension. Or if someone cast dimension gate nearby, he may find to have gotten "under the wizards robe" so to speak.

Remember a portal works both ways...

Perhaps then it is only the outside that is enchanted. I can just see people popping out of his robes every now and then. "Hello there planar traveller. Would you mind getting out of my clothes?"

But seriously....

The wizard would probably want to make the robe command-word activated. But I'm a tad confused. If the robes are a portal and he goes through it, wouldn't he just wind up on the other side without the robe? How would he get back?
