Living in a neighborhood where the police are corrupt and the gangs are trying (and thanks to an armed populace, failing) to take over. In Anchorage, I had to use some form of armed defense about every other year from 1990 on. when I lived in the worst neighborhoods, I had a home invasion inside a security building every year; 2 blocks away, 3 per 2 years. Most left when they realized the home was presently occupied. Walking a mile in semi-wilderness where bears, wolverines, and moose are endemic (that's the neighborhood I spent my high school years in. The 35+ glaciers once in view may be gone, but the wildlife isn't.)</blockquote>
