About 4 months after 4e started up, I gave up on it, not satisfied with it at the time. I've since developed a new appreciation for it, and received pretty much the full Essentials line as Xmas presents, and am planning on running an Essentials "only" game soon (only meaning I plan to pull in some 4e core elements such as Rituals).
My concern now is, that since the Class Compendium seems to be either delayed or removed from production (as evidenced by its removal from the product release schedule), I need to give some thought to home brew options for mixing in some of the things from core 4e that are not simple ports.
Some, such as the Warlord are relatively easy (and I include here things like expanding some of the current options, like new domains for the cleric and such), others, such as Multi-Classing...not so easy! For instance, the feats that would give you powers from another class, such as Novice Power, have no real analog for Essentials, because several classes don't USE encounter or daily powers! This is especially true with the Fighter Knight and Slayer builds.
Would it be overpowered to simply redo the feats to let you select a power of the extra class? Such as, for Novice Power, instead of being able to replace an encounter power with one of equal or lower level, you instead choose an encounter power from the new class of equal or lower level (or perhaps only half level), doing the same for the feats that access the utility and daily power as well? Would that be overpowered?
The other problem here, of course, is the reverse: A character multiclasses into Slayer...but there are no encounter or daily powers to choose from? How to handle that in a balanced and fair manner?
I seem to recall many early complaints that multiclassing was overall, very weak, and at face value I'm not too horrified at the thought of a character getting at most 3 powers from another class, but also want to see what folks who've got more system experience think.
Now with a bit of luck, there will be published books that have this covered (the Compendium with real luck), but coming up with my own options is always fun, just in case.
