I just started watching the series myself. Since I'm not watching them consistently, is there a map or some guidelines you might recommend so we can keep the story straight? Thanks for any helpful websites too -

Is this series available in english on VHS? Or is it only on DVD? I made the mistake of reading a comic book graphic novel of 'Record of the Lodoss War' and now I'm hooked. But the only anime I've seen of it is a DVD set in my local movie rental shop. Too bad I only have a VHS player. Hence the above question.

You ask... is it... is it... in... in... ENGLISH!!! *urk* Ohh.. oh... somebody call an ambulance... the very reading of this sacrilege is giving me a heart attack...

*aargh* *THUMP*

Really, I saw the English dub for RoLW, and like most other dubs, was very poor quality voice acting.

In general, it can be quite frustrating that Japanese concepts of masculine vs. feminine are so different than ours with respect to voice and appearance. But that is often mitigated by the obviously more authentic expression of emotion and other subtlties in the verbal communication of the originial Japanese.

Of course, I don't speak Japanese, so subs are always a must. So I guess I'm not totally a purist.

I probably wouldn't have ordered the DVD (dubbed), except for the fact that my VHS copy is so worn out that I can barely read the subtitles anymore!

Besides, it'll be nice to watch the action without having to look down to read what people are saying.

Watched both versions of Record of Lodoss War (the wonder of DVD allows me to watch it in both formats), and I overwhelmingly prefer the english dub; it just dosen't feel right when everybody in a medieval Europe-style setting is speaking Japanese.

Saying that english dubs for anime are poor-quality is getting less and less true as time goes on, and I've watched quite a few anime series where the dub is pretty damn good. Nothing wrong with perferring subtitles, though... even though there are a lot of annoying anime fans out there who only wached subbed anime and feel that it makes them more mature and enlightened than dub watchers.

There use to be a english vhs version of the Lodoss war but it could be out of print now. I gave my vhs copies away after buying the series on dvd, which is the way to go
