No show, no exp I would simply change your rule about giving exp to players who dont show. Thats a definite no-no in my game. That will nip in the bud any future problems of the ilk. Awarding exp to a no-show is wrong on many levels, and so is running a character when the player isn't there. An absent character should be considered "R&R" or on "guard duty". 1) Its not fair to the players who show up. 2) If a players absences are creating a big level gap, then they need to re-assess their commitment to the game. 3) If someone who rarely shows up gives an ultimatum like that, who cares? you hardly see them anyway! 4) Its likely a player who has their character run "in absentia" would be quite irritated if their character was killed, maimed, lost a valued item, lost levels, etc. The risk outweighs the reward. And "playing it safe" with the PC is absurd and would earn no exp anyway. 5) Everyone misses a game now and then, why add insult to injury by trying to dictate some optional exp award like this? Someone is bound to try and abuse it eventually. 6) If a game situation dictates an absent player's character absolutely MUST be used, the character should still get no more exp than an NPC (as they are an NPC for that session), namely 10%-20% of what the PC's are getting. I had an absent player's character a couple of weeks ago on "guard duty" at the entrance of a dungeon. Following a near-TPK, he was able to drag some bodies out for Rez, and I gave the player a 500 exp bonus for that. But certainly no exp for the bugbears and Deadwood Treant involved in the encounters that night!
