Ever play I12: Egg of the Pheonix

I ran it about, oh, 18 years ago.

I remember it was fun, but we didn't get all the way through it. I still have it, though, if you'd like me to look up anything in it.

IIRC, there's an earlier version as well.

I played that one years and years ago. I don't remember it completely, but I do recall having a lot of fun. That could have easily been the players and the DM.

For that money, though, I don't know if any module would be worth that.

Wow. Egg of the Phoenix. Holy hell, that brings back memories. Its a rather portly publication, way thicker than the standard module. In fact...(digging around shelves)...darn...must have lost it. It was pretty badly worn when I finally put to bed. I ran that game twice with two different groups. Both games felt very different, though both plagued by the same problem.

The game's zenith deals with a climactic fight between the players and the Elemental Gods (from Fiend Folio I think). For the life of me, I cannot remember why this battle occurred, except it did, or rather didn't. In both games I ran, we played all the way until this final fight, and group folded. I am not kidding. On both occasions, we were ONE session away from completing the module, and the group broke up. To date, I never ran the end of Egg of the Phoenix, though playing through it twice.

That's a pretty hefty price tag for a module I've never even heard of, so now I'm curious. Has anyone played this and is this a good module that's rare (and hence the price) or just mediocre?

Those prices on Amazon seem a bit high. The Acaeum (mentioned above in another post), the site for prices for old and out-of-print D&D materials, list the value of I12 in near mint condition at $40 ranging all the way down to $8 for a copy in fair condition.

IIRC the earlier version was an RPGA module by Frank Mentzer. I remember playing a paladin through it and it was a good and fun AD&D module. But I wouldn't pay $40.00 for it.

*Edit* Yes, on the Acaeum (http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/modpages/r.html) the RPGA version R3 is listed. But boy the prices range from $56 to $254. I suppose if you're a collector but….
