The setting is pretty vanilla fantasy. However, even a vanilla fantasy setting that has seen years of play and development time can contain some interesting material. Personally, I have zero interest running a campaign set in Norrath. If the design is good and fairly compatible with d20, I will still give the game a close look. There is certainly potential for adding new useful options for d20 fantasy games. The spells only have levels in that there is a minimum level required to cast each spell. So, a 24th level spell is one that you can cast at 24th character level or higher. This level is class dependent (much like 3E), so Greater Healing is a 24th level Cleric spell, a 29th level Druid spell, and a 39th level Paladin spell. EQ has at least as many spells as the PHB. Some of them won't translate in a paper-and-pencil game though. Power levels are impossible to really compare - its really a matter of opinion. In my opinion, a 20th level D&D character can kick the ass out of any 60th level EQ character, no matter how uber. A real RPG can have spells like Time Stop, Wish, or Harm. You wont find anything like Sleep or Augury in EQ. Here is a link for a good EQ spell catalog (including Bard songs): http://eq.castersrealm.com/menu/spells.asp Oh, and after about 20th level or so, Clerics have absolutely NO BUSINESS in melee unless your just farting around, hehe! ;) EQ looks a lot like traditional D&D, but the gameplay is a bit different, especially as you start leveling up. Clerics get plate armor and are the toughest casters generally, but they are still casters. Level appropriate monsters will chew up any cleric going mano-a-mano pretty fast after the newbie levels. If a cleric is holding a weapon, it's usually going to be for the bonuses it provides. Actually swinging it will get you teased, hehe! The online gameplay in EQ emphasizes a "combined arms" strategy to killing stuff and taking its treasure. Its a grouping game, after all. The cleric is a specialist and really pretty much focuses on healing exclusively- some players only discover this after playing the class for a while. Finding a good cleric is sometimes a problem in EQ.., just like D&D. :p
