Asha'man: For someone who protests so much about how they disagree with me, you don't say that much that I actually disagree with or feel disagrees with what I said. I'm left with the feeling that you disagree with how I said things or may be what I left unsaid that you thought should be said, more than you disagree with the actual content of what I wrote. There is not much I can say in answer to that. Indeed. If this was the entirety of my world view, it would be a very bleak outlook. As for 'silly', of all things what would you prefer I say of believing in the goodness of humanity? I believe 'silly' is about the least harsh thing I can say about it. In truth, I don't imagine we humans are very funny at all, but at least its better to laugh about our mutual predicament than fume or cry about it. Misanthropy? As Socrates said, ""Misanthropy develops when without art one puts complete trust in somebody thinking the man absolutely true and sound and reliable and then a little later discovers him to be bad and unreliable...and when it happens to someone often...he ends up...hating everyone." I don't put my trust in people, and therefore try hard to remember not to get hurt and take it personally when they inevitably screw up. I have previously advocated that one has no right to be angry when they are wronged, an idea alot of people resisted. But if you have no right to be angry with people, how are you possibly to become misanthrope? Things that you find to be 'silly', aren't things that you come to hate or fear. Personally, I find it an effective pallative vs. self-righteousness and unwarranted pride. Obviously both are bad, but which is worse I wonder? And which is more common? Hmmm. I don't want to minimize the importance of not gouging your neighbors eyes out with a drill, but why can't it be possible that both things are important? I'm incredibly tempted to do a commentary on modern life here, but I caught myself and will resist. I don't see those two thoughts as being mutually exclusive.
