The following all have the prerequisite of Not a Player Character. Plot Device As a plot device, this character has one major resource that he has no real right to. This can be the form of a death ray, powerful artifact, fanatic followers or any similar singular benefit. Improved Plot Device Prerequisites: Plot Device This character has multiple major resources to which he has no real right; fanatic followers, nuclear weapons, death rays and an armada of warships all qualify as a major resource. Advanced Plot Device Prerequisites: Improved Plot Device, Plot Device As an advanced plot device, this character can change the nature of the game world to improve the story. He always has one hp left and a means for escape (until it's time for his dramatic death). He can capture the heroes at any time, if required. He can use any skill or feat necessary to the entertaining play of the game. This does not make him immortal, merely immune to the vagaries of die rolls that would cheapen his role in the collective story. Thus, he doesn't die like a bitch or go out like a putz. Rather, this character is an interesting and intriguing foe that plagues the characters for some time before being truly defeated. Special: GMs with poor self restraint or a tendency to give this quality to all named NPCs should not use this trait, ever. It will only result in no fun for the players, which will cheapen the game for everyone, even the GM. Does that help? EDIT: Alternatively, for Advanced Plot Device, you could have each usage require expending an action point. This would provide an absolute limit upon the ability which takes much of the onnus off the GM but does mean that he may fall before his time if the PCs are unusually lucky/successful.
