Lord Mhoram
Hero
Never have used an actual mini.
Back in the day maps were for finding the way back out of a dungeon, and all combat was theater of the mind. In third (and 4th for when we played it) I have a wet erase 1" square map*. We use coins or small counting stones (like in magic) to show were people are on a the map. But they don't represent the character, just his position.
*or an unmarked 8 foot by 6 foot dry erase board that has no markings, and just use a tape measure for distance. No squares, just inches. So our fireballs are round.
