Factotum metamagic feats - spell or spell-like?

So if I want to maximize a fireball as a factotum, am I looking to get the "Maximize Spell" feat and wait until I get a 6th level spell slot? Or do I use the "Maximize Spell-Like Ability" feat and just apply it 3x a day to my meager list of mimicked spells?

By the rules I don't see why the second one wouldn't work - but I think that the wording of "maximize SLA" is that you have to pick the particular SLA upon taking the feat, right? Meaning that it would be useless if you WEREN'T packing fireball that day - but then, I'm not the rules-master that some others on the forum are.

That's another question: Could you take "Maximize Spell-Like Ability: Arcane Dilettante"? Assuming that "Maximize Spell-like ability" is the appropriate feat, of course.

The factotum uses normal metamagic feats, as explicitly stated at the end of the arcane dilletante ability description.

"If you wish to enhance a spell with a metamagic feat, you must apply the feat when you prepare the spell. In addition, you must be capable of using a spell of the modified spell's level."

Ignoring the sloppiness on spell level vs spell slot, this is pretty clear that you use Maximize Spell and it increases the spell level normally.

As to whether Maximize SLA works... ummm... does Ability Focus: Arcane Dilletante work? There was just a whole thread about similar issues, and the result was unclear (to me, anyway). For balance reasons, I'd say no, Maximize SLA doesn't work, but that's ruling on function, not form.

If I were DMing this I would say that the Factotum would not be able to maximize a spell until he or she had seen a maximized spell cast. Remember your factotum cannot use a spell until he or she has actually seen it.
