Venus suspects Koto is a spy for her father, who begrudgingly advanced the funds for this expedition at the behest of his elder sister, the Baroness Marie Avery Hawkwood, an ardent supporter of the Emperor and his bold new policies.</p><p></p><p>• Dame Roz Delamo of the minor House Delysa, a fellow noble, whose ambition to redeem her family’s disgrace at the hands of the wily Decados has driven the young woman to ally herself with Venus in a vain attempt to win the favor of that despicable family. Venus hopes this quest will provide Roz with the opportunity to gain favor with the more enlightened factions of the empire, and lure the Delysa from their degrading orbit around the Decados.</p><p></p><p>• Entered Guildsman Tarius of the Supreme Order of the Charioteers has come to the Order of the Phoenix by way of recommendation of one of Venus’s cousins, who served with the young Engineer on a diplomatic mission to the Vau. Because that mission earned him both his guild rank and imperial badge, Venus contacted Tarius with the opportunity to join her on a quest. While she has a personal aversion to overuse of cybernetics and Think Machines, Venus believes the technical acumen of people like Tarius may prove invaluable to Humaniti’s future. </p><p></p><p>• Nicolo Parvalos, a Battle Brother, serves as the Pancreator’s strong arm in this Quest. Venus does not know much about the good Brother, but prays Nicolo can be swayed to see her psychic gifts as a layman’s extension of the theurgic gifts the Pancreator bestows upon him. Because the Church has such a powerful influence on the empire, Venus believes that the more clergy to be individually “converted” to seeing that many of the faith’s taboos (especially those concerning psychics and technology) will promote necessary social growth that is being imperiled by needless Inquisitions.</p><p></p><p>By joining the Company of the Phoenix, Venus hopes to retain her independence from her family obligations while at the same time gaining in her own personal honor (with the potential of choosing her own husband, if she so chooses).
