Faking it

So my gnome illusionist 1/bard 1 now has a flaming longsword. Well, OK, it's actually a longsword with continual flame cast on it. It sure looks impressive, though. :p

Any other ideas on simple tricks to make a character look a lot more impressive than he really is?

Not exactly what you're talking about, but my wizard uses a hat of disguise to look like himself when he's alterselfed into a troglodyte.

Really, a hat of disguise is incredibly useful for anyone into the whole trickery/social/appearance thing.

A second edition character used to have a sword with continual darkness cast on it. When he drew it, he'd shout, "Midnight!" Despite the fact that it saved our bacon a lot, the party hated the thing. (Perhaps it was due to the 60 foot radius that spell used to have.) My character could see through it, due to a DM special, but nobody else could.

Good times: a named sword for the price of a second level spell.

If you're a gnome, use shading to de-emphasize the gnose -- er, nose -- so you can pass as a halfling.

Be a ranger, carry an instrument (put like 2 ranks into performance), take weapon finess, stick to short swords/shortbows, and load up on the dex. You can pass yourself off as a bard (as long as you don't play your instrument) and then scare the crap out of your opponents when you pone them in combat.

Friend of mine in a PbP game played a huge dim-witted but charming and nice boy with a huge axe.

Human sorcerer 1, str, dex and con close to 18, int and wis non-existant, cha 16. Feats: Martial Weapon Proficiency Greataxe, Toughness, e.g. 11 hitpoints at level 1. He was a blast to play with.

Hat of disguise to make your wizard look like he is in full plate or your fighter look like he is a wizard. Then the intelligent spellcasters will generally target you with the wrong type of weak class saves.

Prestidigitation can do a lot, lightning crackling out of your eyes when you get angry can be a little intimidating.

Disguising yourself as youself (either through a nice Hat or a spell) can be a great way to confuse people with Detect Magic and/or Arcane Sight. No matter how enemies look through the illusion, they still see the same thing. I can't say how your DM will deal with it, but it drives PCs crazy :)
