Falling and Levitation?

Here's another one from our most recent session- Can a player under the effect of a levitation spell step off a cliff during their turn, fall most of the way to the ground and then use the levitation movement to land safely?

If so how far can a player fall in a round?

Too lazy to calculate it right now but I think in 6 seconds you fall approximately 1500 ft... enough for most game things. And yes, if you´re already under the effect of levitation, you could do that. At least you could in 3.0. Any changes?

Free-falling is pretty close to 500 ft in the first round (6 sec) and 1,000 ft each subsequent round. Slightly different figures were given in Dungeon #93 from last year.
