Familiar HD

Hit Dice: For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master's character level or the familiar's normal HD total, whichever is higher.

Does that mean that familiar gain feats every 3 levels the character gains?

"Effects related to number of hit dice" are things like who-goes-to-sleep with a Sleep spell, or how-many-undead-can-I-turn.

The cat familiar of a 10th level wizard has half a hit die. However, his hit points are half the wizard's, and if someone tries to cast Sleep on him, he's treated as a 10HD creature.

But he isn't a 10HD creature, so he doesn't get the BAB, skill points, saves, or feats of one.

Makes familiars weak compared to animal companions and paladin mounts...

They always have been.

Do you expect a cat - even a magic cat - to stand up to a Legendary Tiger in combat?

They've got better hit points than an ordinary cat, they're smarter than an ordinary cat, but the mechanic is completely different to mounts and companions.

I don't think that's a flaw in the system, an oversight, or something that needs to be changed.
