Blue Planet is one of the most brilliant hard science fiction settings out there, right after Transhuman Space. The backstory is that near the end of the 21st century, people from Earth discover a stable wormhole leading to another star system with a habitable world - a planet they call Poseidon, for 97% of the surface are covered by water.They send a colony expedition through the wormhole. The colonists set up shop and wait for reinforcements from Earth - but they never come, since Earth suffers an ecological catastrophe thanks to an accidentally released grain virus. The colonists are forced to "go native", and prosper against all the odds.A hundred years later, Earth has stabilized enough to send another expedition to Poseidon. Scientific research teams then discover a weird substance they dub "Long John", which helps tremendously with manipulating biological proscesses and is highly useful for rejuvenation treatments - and thus, increadibly valuable.A "gold rush" sets in and new colonists and explorers flock to the planets. Multiple multinational corporations set up shop. Political strife is imported from Earth and is intensified, and some of the descendants of the original colonists - now dubbed "Natives" are rather unhappy with all those newcomers. The colonists have do deal with the Law, criminals, native terrorists, and the hostile environment if they are to survive and prosper.And in the depths of Poseidon, strange creatures with uncanny powers move around, observing these new entities and making their own plans for the future...The whole setting has a great atmosphere - a mixture of Wild West and Cyberpunk combined with one of the best described alien environments out there (a few of the authors are marine biologists, and it shows). I can only recommend it to everyone.And $5 per book is a steal.</blockquote>
