First Post
The FFG website (Fantasy Flight Games) has posted a job opening for an undisclosed 4e project.

Very cool! I wonder what they are working on? Legends & Lairs updates? Midnight 4e? Adventures?

Fantasy Flight Games is looking for contract RPG writer-developers to work on as-yet-undisclosed projects related to Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition at its headquarters in Roseville, Minnesota.

Could that be you? Read on…

You'll Work on a Team. As a writer-developer, you will work on a highly collaborative team of peers. You will justify your ideas and critique others'. You will playtest what you write, and what others write. All of this will be worth the time it takes, because it will make your writing twice as good, or better. If that doesn't sound awesome to you, think twice about applying.

You'll Write. As a writer-developer, you'll write 3,000 words every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. If you haven't done this volume of writing before, day in and day out, think twice about applying.

You'll Know Game Design and D&D. You'll have experience designing game mechanics, inventing game background material, and playing previous editions of Dungeons & Dragons.

You'll Be a Contractor. This, obviously, is a paying gig. Although payment will be commensurate with your abilities and experience, it will fall in the neighborhood of $.045–$.05/word. The mathematically inclined will note that this amounts to $675–$750/week. Although you will work on site, you won't be an employee of Fantasy Flight Games. (Don't ask if you can work offsite. The answer is no.) You'll bring your own computer.

You'll Work March–June, and Perhaps July and August. This is the timeframe of the contract. March–June is non-negotiable. July and August availability is ideal, but we'll burn that bridge from applicant to applicant.

We Are NOT Looking For
  • That special breed of freelance game writer who has not actually played a roleplaying game since 1991.
  • Anyone who cannot work in Roseville, Minnesota, from at least March until June.

To Apply
To be considered, send us a single PDF document containing the following things, in the following order. Make the filename something similar to "firstname_lastname.pdf". Email it to write-dev@fantasyflightgames.com, as an attachment.

  • Your resume and/or list of published credits.
  • A list of campaign settings previously published by FFG with which you are familiar, and to what extent you are familiar with them. ("I've heard of X," "I ran a campaign of Y," "I am a published contributor to Z," etc.)
  • A 100-word description of the last roleplaying game session you played or ran, and why it was (or was not) awesome.
  • A 500-word writing sample, published or not, that showcases your ability to write text for RPGs. If your sample has been published, send your original draft with all its funky warts, rather than the publication version.
  • The names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of two professional references who are familiar with your writing, professionalism, and work ethic.

USD675 to USD750 a week as a contractor providing your own computer? How do RPG writers live?

I'm doing fine with a 36K/year salary in California.

I'd be living like a king down in Minn. on that much.

They're in Minnesota. $36,000/year is a nice quality of life.
That's what I was gonna say.

I hope that they redo some of their Legends & Lairs series. They had some hardbacks that were all kinds of awesome. I got the whole lot of them for $5 each during a blow-out sale, and never looked back. Excellent stuff.

Interesting. I enjoyed working with FF back in the day, but I'm nowhere near them, and can't move for a contract position. I'd love to work with 'em as a freelancer again, though, at some point.

You know, Ari, I bet if you contacted them and let them know your status, they'd work with you again in a flash.
