Fantasy Sports and gambling games

I've always wanted to work some kind of sporting event into one of my games. I've got some vague ideas on the subject, but I was wondering if anyone here had done such a thing, and how you did it - what kinds of rules you used, how the sport worked, etc.

Along the same lines, I'd like to come up with some unique gambling games. Same questions apply.

I know there are some gambling games presented in various sources, but are there any true sports presented?

In 1st ed. WFRP's Middenheim they used to play a game similar to soccer with a bound snotling. Snotling ball had its own set of hooligans even!

you can use any minis you have to represent teams. I love the game as is

to d20 the game, use the d20 ranged attack rules for passes with a 10' range increment, reflex saves to catch and d20 grapple rules to resolve blocking and tackling.

pretty much any of the rules have a rough d20 equivalent

I had been thinking of a rugby equivalent - something between rugby and those Aztec/Mayan ballgames. I was already thinking of passing using 10' increment rules, and of ways to adapt feats to the game.

And Quidditch is a good example, though I could stand to think up something not quite so derivative! Even if my Wizard's schools are based on Hogwarts.... :)

Races of Stone has rules for king-of-the-hill, wrestling, and "goatball" (a type of contact handball played on platforms) in the Goliath section.

I thought I'd raise this thread from the dead - I'm still interested in coming up with a handful of popular games that can be used in game. I've got an Aztec-rugby-basketballish game, of course gladatorial contests, archery, and jousting are good standard medieval games, but I'd love to hear if anyone has come up with any others, more "whole-cloth" inventions. Ideally they'd be team sports, because of course D&D is a group game.

One of my guiding principles on this is that the game should operate off of the same rules as regular D&D games in order to make the play as intuitive as possible...

Dragon Magazine, either #118 or #119, talked a lot about jousting, tournaments, gladiatorial combat and the like, which provided great sport for the time periods on which fantasy games were originally based.

Also, for 2nd Edition, TSR released an adventure pack which had one adventure focused on a set of Olympic-style games.

Sadly, the Olympics and similar competitions provide elements that would make for an interesting adventure, yet I don't know of any product or adventure that capitolizes on them.

Wish I Could Be Of Better Assistance,
Flynn
