Granted, it should have lasted for five seasons, but four seasons is about three and a half more than most science fiction shows get. It is three+ seasons more than many "mainstream" shows get. By almost any standard is was a success and didn't "fall flat on its face".It didn't survive longer than it did primarily because the Sci-Fi channel misused it and marketed it badly, not because no one liked the themes of the show.
