I like mixing and matching and then finding new forms out of the old clothes. So far, my current setting has a: A tweaked Roman Pantheon (Neptune is named Nemo; Pluto is now Orcus and so on ) ~ all familiar enough so the players can grasp it; A Lithuanian inspired Pantheon. On the surface it's obscure, but from what we know it's close enough to various Norse/Slavic conceptions. I've added a dash of Celt; A proto-monotheistic cult of Tarim (inspired by Cerebus; Tarim is really just an anagram of REH's Mitra). Old Testament Terrible meets medieval German Crusaders with a touch of the Spanish Inquisition. Poor spell power but effective-enough ritual magics. There are a few enduring "peasant" heresies that the High Patriarch wishes to stamp out but much of his energies are consumed fighting off the horse tribes; A northern tribal set, inspired by various Amerindian tribes, but with Maygar derived names. Very Alien seeming. Largely animists. What's left of the elves are in this camp; Then I have a race of "atheists", who while they recognise the gods do exist, think it's all just a celestial protection racket, and trust instead in their own powers of magic and alliance with elemental lords to protect and serve them. (It hasn't worked out well for them lately, so there is a set who are now investigating necromancy as game changer). However, in their own cities, they do not prohibit but rather license religions, and its turned out to be a very good source of revenue for them (and a source of new heresies); There's some more but they haven't come into play yet. All these divine paradigms are closely associated with various culture groups. The gods themselves rarely manifest on earth but normally operate through avatars, who are revealed every several hundred years. Some are later exposed as fakes and others are often slain by their rivals. In remorse after one famous duel, one avatar renounced his status, turned his back on Tarim, and is currently bound to this plane as the apparently undying world walker.
