Memphis is a city blessed with restaurants as my thin wallet and wide waist will attest. Y'all come down and I'll tell you where to go for the good stuff. We enjoy lots of local places over the big chains. Memphis is of course justifiably famous for BBQ, catfish, fried chicken and soul food; though I don't do fried chicken personally. Lots of good Thai, Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese. We don't have a Korean BBQ that I'm really pleased with. My favorite is just off the strip in Vegas. One nice trend here is pan-Asian places. You can get Vietnamese egg-rolls, pad Thai, Hanan beef and golden curry in the same meal, yum. We've got Mexican, my wife's favorite on every corner. Japanese seems to be on the rise with several good new places opening, but we already had some good places. In fact there is a bp gas station just down the street from me with a sushi chef. My daughter would go there every day for her custom vegetarian avocado, cucumber and carrot rolls. I'm more likely to go to a chain for burgers, sandwiches or Italian, but chains are rarely my favorite places in any category. Because I have a family of 5 we often eat there for the prices and save the really good places for more romantic outings. Ah wait, I do like to hit IHOP or Perkins for breakfast. So what's a gastropub? Is that what we call a brew pub, where they make their own beer on site? Or is it more like Applebees or Bennigans? Neighborhood bar and grill kind of thing?
