I've played at least 1 book out of the first four. Our group takes turns DM'ing. I DM'd Rise of the Runelords and had a real blast with that series. Since it was their first run through there was some errors and adjustments that had to be made. I only did one book out of CoCT but I was really grooving on that game before our DM had to drop out. The next DM picked Second Darkness and we played 3 books of that. He decided to not even run the 4th book because he knew we would chafe under some of its requirements. The second DM came back at that point but the SD books had spoilers that gave away the plot of CoCT and we decided not to run it. Our current DM is running Legacy of Fire and we're on the 3rd book of that. We're really liking it so far, of the three I played in that one is so far my favorite. My only experience with Council of Thieves is two aborted pbp start ups. Neither one made it past the opening scene and first fight. From reading the players guide though it looked pretty neat. I'm afraid I haven't played much of the two you picked, but if I had to choose one to play now I'd probably go with CoT. The devil pacts aspect of the nation sounded interesting, especially if you were playing a good character. I think a paladin would go mad!
