Feat: Cannibalize Spell

Cannibalize Spell (Metamagic)

Prerequisite: Ability to Memorize Arcane or Divine Spells.

Benefit: This feat allows the character to use memorized spells to cast spells that have already been expended from memory. In order to do this the character must sacrifice a number of spell levels equal to the level of the spell to be cast plus 1 (with a minimum of 1 extra spell level if less than 1 hour) for every hour that has passed since the spell was last in memory.

First, a minor quibble about terminology: in 3rd edition spells are prepared, not memorized.

Much more seriously, I think that this feat would allow casters to cast way too many copies of their highest level spells; a 20th level wizard could cast 20 ninth level spells by burning all his lower spell slots- and that is not counting bonus spells due to high intelligence.

Finally, compare this feat to Signature Spell (FRCS)- this allows one spell to be cast by sacrificing a spell of a higher level than it. Only one spell becomes a signature spell each time the feat is taken, and it must be one that has previously been a subject of the Spell Mastery feat.

In other words, the proposed feat is too powerful.

Agreed. While it's an interesting idea, this feat mucks about with the fundamentals of the spell preparation system too much to be balanced (or desirable, IMO).
