Feat - Silly newb question

First Post
Although I've been posting here a few monthes, but I've never started a topic. This is partly because I'm re-familarising myself with DnD. 3.5 is especially new to me. Hence... STOOPID N00B Q?

One reply, yay or nay will be enough.

Does a multi-class char get a feat at first level for free?

The PHB suggests not, but it can be read to say yes. I have read several books, none of which answer this Q, and although the PHB doesn't mention feats and MC'ing, I've seen at least a coupla issues of Dragon which suggests a char gets the MC 1st level feat.

Why?? Gotta fighter who is pretty cool, but I can see me getting bored somewhere down the line. Am considering the core Ranger for a level or two (after Fighter level 4) or the UA Paragon now.

The answer I get will determine whether I even consider MC. This guy is a feat based char, and I don't want to potentially cripple him in a campaign that's taking time to develop but if very much fun.

Yes, or no will suffice. TNX

No. You get a feat at 1st character level, not class level. Your class levels do not determine feat progression, unless you are in a class like fighter who gets bonus feats.

Aquiring Feats

All characters receive a feat at character level 1, 3, 6, and every 3rd level thereafter.

Human characters receive a feat at character level 1.

Bonus feats are received by the relevant class level.

All these factors are cumulative. You receive all these feats as your character reaches the qualifying condition.

Let me point out that the PHB certainly specifies the effects of multiclassing on feats. Look at the end of the chapter on Classes, under "Multiclass Characters: Class and Level Features: Feats".

Feats: For multiclass characters, feats are received every three character levels, regardless of individual class level.

Races with level adjustments gain feats slower than races without level adjustments. For instance, races with a level adjustment of 1 would gain a feat one level later than normal. A tiefling gets its second feat at class level 3, not effective level 3. Thus, tiefling rogue who is level 2 would still only have one feat (the one he got for being a first level character). He has a CL of 2 but a ELC of 3. If another person played a human rogue with the exact same amount of XP, he would have two feats since he has a CL of 3 and a ECL of 3.
