Feats and Dead Levels

So with the new stance on no dead levels and character progression up to level 30 and Fighters finally getting their own unique abilities, what do you think is going to happen to Feats? I think there will be a ton more and you maybe pick a Feat every other level regardless of what class you are.

I'm pretty sure that however the character progression is done, everything will be done on the same scale. For example, every character gets a new class ability every 3 levels, a new feat every 2 levels, new racial abilities every 5 levels, etc. Thoughts?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Feat, Talent, Feat, Talent, etc. - like in d20 Modern (or fairly much, like my more recent house rules for 3e).

Mike Mearls and Dave Noonan were talking about that in Podcast #14. Changing the frequency of feat acquisition changes how big a benefit feats should grant. It's an interesting discussion.

Right, but it was all hypothetical. They never said if Feats are more frequent or not. That's actually why I posted this.

Or Feat, Ability Score, Feat, Racial Ability...

Cheers, LT.

I don't think they count feats in the "dead level" count. Fighter 3 is often called a dead level. You get a feat at level 3. I think they're only counting class abilities.

For my part, I meant F,T,F,T as a class progression, as per d20 Modern, etc. So, IOW, in addition to automatic bonus feats [by HD].

One possibility is that feats are gained based on class level instead of character level.

It's a minor technical change but this way feats (as "generic have/not_have abilities that can be taken by any class") can be alternated with selectable class features.

For example, a class X could get:

Lv1: Class ability
Lv2: Feat
Lv3: Ability increase
Lv4: Class ability
Lv5: Feat
Lv6: Ability increase
Lv7: Class ability
Lv8: Feat
Lv9: Ability increase

etc.

No dead levels this way.
