Agile Riposte boosts your Defense-equivalent against opponents with high Strength scores. I gave it to Lu Bu in a d20 Medieval campaign and the PCs couldn't hit him despite flanking and Inspiration and Plan... but as far as I can tell, it doesn't work against Weapon Finesse, so that's how they killed him. Armor Proficiency (light, medium, heavy, powered). You can get up to +2 Defense at no ACP or up to +4 without anyone noticing. The Field Scientist has the ability to apply Int to Defense (which is a bit cheesy due to front-loading, though). The Techie can create mastercraft armor (which in Modern boosts the Defense) but it costs XP ... you have to pay for power. The Fast, Martial Artist and Infiltrator all really crank your Defense as well. A Gunslinger, especially one who takes Elusive Target, can really boost their Defense anytime they get into melee ... and due to their ability to avoid AoOs when using ranged weapons, you can use it anytime you're not facing a large bartender armed with a greatmaul. (Well, actually, that works too, but it's probably not a great idea, in case the attacker gets a natural 20!)
