Oirhandir softly cursed his luck. It was cumbersome enough to drag that staff around with him everywhere, always looking for a spot to set it down whenever he wanted to dance with Scarlet. But carrying around his bow and shield was out of the question, and that bow would be welcome in his hand about now. As quickly and as quietly as he could, the elf approached the two figures, all while trying to identify their cargo. OOC:[sblock]Hmm, this is tough, mainly because I don't know how far away they are. At this point, he doesn't feel the "cargo" is in any immediate danger, but he certainly doesn't want to lose the trio (worst case scenario). Between his own martial prowess and his ability to summon help (and he presumes that a loud cry for assistance would draw a crowd), he's not afraid to take on both abductors. Mostly, he doesn't want either of them to escape unidentified, so he wants to get as close as possible without alerting them to his presence. Equipped as he is, Oirhandir moves at 30, but another 1/2 lb of encumbrance and he's at 20. No, I didn't plan it that way, I just thought about what he would carry around with him (armor, haversack, staff, whip, sword, spell pouch), and what he would leave at camp (horse, tack, bow, quiver, shield). I added it all up and it came to 42.5 lbs...better lucky than smart! So, really, this comes down to picking a movement rate. Walk is 30, double move is 60, run is 120. His move silently is a measly +2 (untrained), so he'll have no choice but to slow to a walk as he gets close. It would be easy to say, "Oirhandir will slow down as he approaches to as not to be detected", but that's not very specific. So, some assumptions. Assume the abductors are first level commoners at +0 for spot and listen. Assume Oirhandir in light armor qualifies as an unarmored person moving at a slow pace (15), so that makes the base DC 10. Assume the abductors are trying to not be caught, so they aren't distracted (still DC 10). Oirhandir's Dex gives him a +2, the masterwork chain shirt is a -1, which gives DC 11. Moving above half speed is -5, or DC 6. I want at least a DC 10, so Oirhandir will not approach closer than 40 feet before slowing to a half-walk. Running is -20 to Move Silently, and at -1 per 10 feet of distance, that means Oirhandir will slow to a hustle about 200 feet away. I don't know what the penalty for hustling vs. walking would be, but I'd guess about -10. If that's the case, Oirhandir will slow from a double move to a walk at about 150 feet distance. So, I think the plan is run to 200', double move to 150', then walk to 40' while looking for a rock or stick to throw for a distraction. If he finds such an object, he'll throw it at about 50', hoping to make a noise in the opposite direction from the one he's approaching. Approaching closer than 40' will be done at a half move (15'/round). I can't give you any actions past that, since I don't know exactly who they are carrying or who the abductors are.[/sblock]
