D&D 5E FGG/Necromancer Games teases 5th Edition Foes

From their Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/project...cer-games-back-for-5th-edition?ref=nav_search

I like the creature itself, I will let the more 5E rules knowledgeable comment on it's suitability. I note it has no Challenge level and also the layout is different, though that is no bad thing just a different style. Although it could be confusing if you once you are used to the standard layout, I have seen in the Starter Set.

Obviously this is probably not how WotC would make creatures as they are going for a distinct vibe of creature (0E/1E) which I like, spell like abilities for example.

EDIT: There is also a 'Hangout on Air' video about Necromancer and 5E, I haven't had the time to watch it yet.

"...its 5th edition foes." Not "it's." :p

But yeah, while it's nice to see 5e monsters, I really wouldn't even begin to try to judge them, beyond a very basic conceptual level, until I have the MM. (And preferably until I understand how monsters are built.)

I don't think I can wait until the end of September without exploding.

Would you like to expand on that?

5E scales spells by allowing higher level slots to cast lower level spells. It isn't Vancian casting. Except NG has arranged spells as if they're using 5E system... but it's Vancian (AD&D) casting style. It's not a good combination.

If they want spell-like abilities, a different format is needed.

Cheers!

I disagree, for all intents and purposes the wizard in 5e is vancian. It follows most of the basic three tenants of it.

  1. Pre-packaged spells.
  2. Spells must be prepared before hand and disappears when used.
  3. Limited prepared spells.

The only thing that has changed is that the spell itself doesn't disappear, but the slot you used does disappear.

As for how their spells will fit in 5e, I won't have an opinion until I see them. If they scale by caster level, they won't fit.

Maybe be they have to present it like that to stick with the OGL presentation?

I've backed it and I'll just be using that layout to figure out how many spell slots it has and then cast the level appropriate spells burning a slot. Presenting it like that also makes it a bit more flexible and usable with other systems too. A nice work around I feel

It may be Vancian-esque, but it's not the same Vancian. This stat block has things like the same spell prepped multiple times, which is a meaningless concept in 5e, and it doesn't call out things like slots.

It's not "the worsest thing evar!!" by far, but it is in error where 5e is concerned.
