I'd like to use the maug in a game today but cannot, for the life of me, believe its CR being a 3. I'm guessing it to be closer to a 5. When you use the CR Guesstimator from that early DRAGON article the hp comes out to a CR 3 on its own. When you factor in the creature's SR, graft, and other abilities, it the CR 3 just can't be right. Can anyone with the FF help a brother out here?

Using the CR Guesstimator from Dragon 276 (which you referred to in your post) the Maug breaks down as:

1. HP divided by 4.5 = 9.1

2. Add +1 for its Pulverize ability, +1 construct traits, +1 graft, +1 rapid repair, +2 SR

(I always add +2 for CR; the article says add +1 or +2 for each SA or SQ)

3. Total = 15.1

4. Divide total by 3 = 5.

So, using the CR guesstimator it should be CR 5.

But- as always, the best way to figure a creature's CR is through playtesting.

Thanks for the input, Scott. I didn't think I was losing my mind. After designing some beasties for publication over the last couple weeks, my mindset was pretty attuned to the whole CR thing. As it turned out, the maugs weren't much of a challenge for the level 10 PCs they were thrown against so I left them a CR 3 (this time...).
