It's a very nasty ability when the quth-maren has any kind of backup to take advantage of cowering PCs. Not so long ago I threw a single quth-maren and a few ghouls and ghasts at a group of six seventh-lvl PCs. The EL for the encounter was 8, so they should have been able to roll through it easily.
