Here is a prestige class I designed for one of my players in my game. There are a variety of fiend slayer type classes, but most of them are more concerned with physical combat that ferreting out fiends. This one is more ranger oriented, though it is designed to work well if the ranger is a multi-classed spellcaster. Fiend Stalker Since ancient times, fiends have plagued humanoids in the land of Trinalia. Events such as the fall of the elven city of Tryconnel in the land before and the scourge of the demon god Paralite’s rise stand as testaments to the destruction that fiends can wreak. Even today in Trinalia, human cultists and dark elf houses serve demonic masters and recently, demonic forces were found to have infiltrated crime syndicates in the free cities. It is no surprise, then, that some individuals have become specialists in tracking down and destroying these menaces. Though demon slayers exist elsewhere that are proficient in dealing with demons, devils, and other fiends on a physical level, sometimes the subtleties of such creatures often elude such crude methods. The fiend stalker is more than just a specialist in slaying demons. Indeed, they perform one of the most important tasks in finding such threats: finding them in the first place. Almost all fiend stalkers have some ranger levels. It is possible to enter the class as a single class ranger, but the talents of multiclassed ranger/wizards and ranger/clerics serve a fiend stalker well. A few fiend stalkers serve among the ranks of the Aborian Crusader orders, and have levels in both prestige classes. Hit die: D8 Requirements: To qualify to become a Fiend Stalker, the character must meet the following requirements: Alignment: Lawful good, lawful neutral, neutral good, or neutral. Patron: Must serve a good power opposed to fiends. Base Attack Bonus: +6 Skills: Hide 8 ranks, Knowledge (the planes) 4 ranks, Move Silent 8 ranks, Sense Motive 8 ranks. Spellcasting: The character must be able to cast spells of 2nd level. Class abilities: Favored enemy: outsiders (evil). Special: Must have slain an evil outsider and present evidence to an order of fiend stalkers or fiend stalker mentor. Class Skills: The Fiend Stalker’s class skills are Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Gather Information (Cha), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (the planes) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Ride (Dex), Use Rope (Dex), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), and Swim (Str). Skill points at each level: 6 + int modifier. Class Features: The following are class features of the fiend stalker prestige class. Weapon and Armor proficiency: Firebrands are proficient with all simple and martial weapon and all armor and shields. Favored enemy: The favored enemy bonus of the fiend stalker continues to increase against fiends, including all evil outsiders and native outsiders of evil alignment descended from fiends (including tieflings and half-fiends). This bonus stacks with existing favored enemy bonuses of this type, but the stalker gains no bonuses other than the listed bonus. In all other ways, this ability behaves as the ranger class ability. Fiendbane spells: Fiend stalkers train specifically in magic useful in detecting and defeating fiends. The fiend stalker may add the listed spells to the character’s list of available spells in one spellcasting class. The spells cannot be added to a spell list for a class that already has the listed spell. In addition, spellcasters that use spellbooks may add one of the listed spells to their spellbooks for no charge. At 1st level, the fiend stalker gains access to these spells as first level spells: detect evil, protection from evil, and magic weapon. At 4th level, the fiend stalker gains access to the following spells as 2nd level spells: align weapon, see invisibility, zone of truth. At 7th level, the fiend stalker gains access to the following spells as 3rd level spells: dispel magic, greater magic weapon, and magic circle against evil. At 10th level, the fiend stalker gains access to the following spells as 4th level spells: banishment, break enchantment, dimensional anchor, dispel evil. Sense fiend: The signature ability of the class, the fiend stalker gains the ability to discern the corrupting effects of fiends. At 2nd level, the fiend stalker can automatically notice the physical presence of fiends. Whenever a corporeal fiend approaches within close range (25 ft +5 feet per 2 class levels), the fiend stalker gets an automatic Sense Motive roll against the fiends spell resistance or a hide check (whichever is better) to notice the fiendish presence, though the number of type of fiends is not disclosed. The first check if fee, but subsequent rolls may be made by concentrating for a single round. At 5th level, the fiend stalker’s ability to detect the presence of fiends extends to incorporeal fiends or fiends possessing objects (use the fiend possession rules, except that the check to detect the presence of a possessing fiend in an object is automatic). In addition, a concentrating fiend stalker may make a sense motive check against 11+the caster level of the fiend to detect any spell, or spell-like effect or supernatural ability of a fiend used to exercise influence on a creature. At 8th level, the fiend stalker can use their sense motive check to instantly recognize any illusion or form shifting magic used by a fiend. The first such check is automatic upon interacting with the illusion or fiend or coming within range and line of sight; subsequent checks may be made by concentrating for one round. Fiend ward: At third level, the fiend stalker uses divine sigils to enhance the power of her magic against fiends, and to ward herself against magic. The fiend stalker gains a +1 sacred bonus to saving throws against spells, spell-like abilities or supernatural abilities of evil outsiders, to save DCs of spells cast at such creatures, and level checks for spell penetration or to dispel fiendish magic. This bonus increased to +2 at 6th level and +3 at 9th level.
