Fiendish Possession Rules

I was rereading through the Book of Vile Darkness and came across the rules for possession. I had seen them before but never really paid much attention to them. This time I decided to delve into them a bit and wasn't overly impressed with them, at least not the initial possession part.

Is it just me, or is it practically an open invitation for plenty of fiends to be running around in the world and causing all types of mayhem? In terms of being reality-based, I fully understand that people always throught demons were possessing people and causing them to do bad or wrong things (most psychiatric and many medical conditions were attributed to demonic possession).

However, for general D&D, it seems that demons have a generally difficult time excerting too much influence in the Prime Material Plane(s). These rules allowing for possession seem to make it way too easy. Even the saving throw against a Babau is Will 17 which is a pretty tought saving throw when 98% of the population are commoners or experts at most.

And will billions of fiends running around in the planes it seems that plenty of them would be possessing people in the Prime. The only thing I can think that might stop them is the requirement to be Ethereal, but Ethereal Jaunt can't be that difficult of a scroll or magical item related item for a moderately ranking fiend to get when he has access to plenty of other realms and resources.

Just curious, but am I perhaps missing something in the equation? Is anyone else not really happy about such?

Yes, you are. Not all fiends have this ability. Those who do, per the BoVD, have a CR modifier.

Fiend Folio revisits this mechanic and instead of making it a flat CR bonus, assigns the abilities over a course of a few levels to a prestige class, which is probably the way to go.

Psion, you actually read my mind. I planned on using that PrC for any purposes/NPCs that would need to fit into that role. Otherwise, I wasn't aware that the Fiend Folio had revisited those rules.

...heck, I wasn't even aware that Fiend Folio came out before BoVD...

I don't have either BoVD or Fiend Folio, but the possession rules in the Eberron CS are pretty good. There too a creature specifically has to have the possession ability to attempt it.
