Fighters Mark and Shifting Question

We were playing living forgotten realms and Larry the fighter of our group marked an opponent the opponent shifted to a spot still adjacent to Larry's character and attacked Larry's character. Should the character be able to get a basic attack against the monster even though the monster remained adjacent to Larry's character?

If the marked target starts adjacent to the fighter, it doesn't matter what direction they shift in or where they end up, the fighter get's his immediate reaction basic attack. All that matters is they shifted while being adjacent to him.

So yes.
