But those things you posted are a range of descriptions of desirable outcomes - they don't in themselves explain what has to be done to achieve them. The rulebook in my backgammon set does give advise on good opening moves, depending on dice roll. And the D&D books are not just lists of rules. They are "handbooks" and "guides". They should tell those who buy them how to achieve things with them. I'm pretty confident I've been playing D&D for longer than you - since 1983 - and I started playing my "indie" philosophy under the influence of Oriental Adventures (a 1st ed AD&D book) plus Dragon Magazine 101 (a magazine published during the era of 1st ed AD&D). So I'm not sure why you are so confident that your narrow conception of how D&D can be played defines the game. For some of us, 4e was the ruleset that best delivered the sort of play we had been using D&D for for over 20 years. For some of us, the 2nd ed invocations of GM force were never a standard feature of our play. And to the extent that 3E depends on that sort of force, it's not a game that I can just pick up and play. As for the idea that a PC can just be converted from 1st ed AD&D to 3E - which sort of PC? A wizard - who becomes ridiculously more powerful due to different save rules? A fighter - who beomces markedly weaker because of changes in skill rules, saving throws and monster and NPC hit points? Maybe some campaigns would play the same in 1st ed as 3E, but I can think of plenty - including campaigns I've participated in - that would not. What makes you think I don't enjoy the colour of the setting? What I was talking about was mere colour. As for sword & sorcery fiction, I'm currently reading some REH Conan stories. To play that sort of adventure in 3E at a minimum you would have to (i) prevent wizards casting spells as standard actions, (ii) eliminate basically all evocation spells and summoning spells, and many others as well, (iii) allow fighters to make all their attacks as a standard action, and (iv) give fighters a save bonus along the lines of the D&Dnext "Indomitable" ability.
