Fighting Styles from CFH

I've been using the fighting styles rules from the Fighter's Handbook for a long time, and have never had any problems. Weapon proficiencies are valuable, and spending one on a style specialization is not getting you anything for free. A style specialization will come in handy sometimes; other times, it will have been more useful to spend that slot picking up an additional weapon. I think it's actually fairly balanced. And I've found my players to be pretty enthused about having those options - it's a nice way to customize a character a little bit without getting into the mess of 3E and 4E feats and powers.
