The sky was always dark above midgar, with scant streams of light filtering down through the clouds to brush across the mass of steel. These days it was even worse, blackness filling the sky to match the darkness of the deadlands below. To the east, Edge seemed a far happier place. True, its skies were far from clear, yet the ground about it was still teeming with life, the lights of dozens of skyscrapers fighting against the coming night sky as the sun flickered its last farewell behind the horizon. It was a picturesque sight, the old and the new. Seen from miles distant, it held a certain indescribably beauty, the terror of the deadlands lessened by distance. For William, it was a homecoming. Midgar, the home of his youth, where he trained as a member of SOLDIER. Not all the memories were good of course, paticularly the end, the coming of Diamond Weapon, the Meteor strike and the eventual disbanding of SOLDIER. Still, it was likely enough to earn a smile, his long journey all but over. Yet for all its beauty, the scenery could not hold all of his attention. For as he approached the cliff-face, he could see the gleam of metal in the twilight. It was a sword, a massive one at that, driven point deep into the soil, a marker forever overlooking Midgar. It certainly seemed to have been there forever, the blade covered in small patches of rust, the only true color on the blade that of its ruby red, black stitched hilt. As he approached, a soft growling could be heard, low and threatening, coming from just behind the blade...
