Rogue. The Rogue has more power and flavour in this edition than previous ones and mechanical support such as bonus actions. Unfortunately for me the Fighter's potential sub-classes have been spun off into actual classes, and obvious fairly sub-classes such as Duelist, Knight and Marksman have been ignored. This to the detriment to both to the flavour of the Fighter and mechanical support for these concepts. So yes you can play a duelist as a Battlemaster fighter but you get no mechanical differentiation at all from any other Fighter till 3rd level and even then you don't get mechanical support such as Unarmed Defense so you can swash your buckle wearing a silk shirt. Because Fighter is such a generic concept it didn't trigger many ideas for the designers ideas such as for example"Danger Sense" for the Barbarian. This is an obvious nod to Conan even though Conan is arguably a Fighter in D&D terms and a heightened awareness of danger is a common ability for all warriors in literature and indeed was a special ability of the Veteran in the playtest. Also why are Fighter's the Cowardly Lions of the warrior classes with: Barbarian's and Paladin's gaining immunity to fear, Ranger's can get Steel Minds, Monks have Stillness of Mind and even Rogue's get Slippery minds! Yes Fighter's get Imdomitable at 9th level but this is weak sauce and too little too late. Heck as 1st level Bard can get Heroism and Clerics, Druids, Warlocks Wizards get Wisdom as a good save (and most likely a better Wisdom to boot). Fighters then tie with Sorcerors as being the most likely flee in terror of all classes! Yup Presto the Wizard faces down the Dragon as Richard the Lionheart pees his pants? Sorry but this does not emulate Beowulf or Leonidas to me? Yup I know that Fighter's do the most damage in a round at 20th level if they trigger abilities and have a certain build but whoop-de-do. They are not the heroes of myth and legend we want them to be.
