Looking at the A5E spell Find Steed, it would be great if there were some additional non-fiendish options when using a 4th level spell slot. Serathiel’s Find Fiendish Steed has these options for the rare variant of the spell, when using a 4th level spell slot.

CR 3 Hell Hound
CR 3 Nightmare
The 4th level 5E spell Greater Find Steed lists these options for alternative steeds:

CR 1 Dire Wolf
CR 2 Dragonnel - this link is to the 5E Dragonnel, as there is no A5E equivalent.
CR 3 Griffon
CR 2 Pegasus
CR 2 Peryton
CR 2 Rhinocerus
CR 2 Saber-Toothed Tiger
I think that all of these are good options for mounts for higher level Heralds and others who have access to the spell, such as a Loremaster with the Summoning school. If it takes researching a rare variant of the 2nd level Find Steed spell, that can be done in about 4 to 6 weeks of research for a cost of 600 to 900gp. This depends on how good the character is at Arcana to make the DC 16 spell craft check (see A5E core rulebook pages 431-432). One possible issue with the A5E version of Find Steed as written is that the steed gets +20 HP per spell slot level above 2nd. That is good for the standard steeds, with a 4th level spell slot giving +40 HP to a Warhorse's base 30 HP for a total of 70 HP. However, for the higher level mounts with the rare spell, it may be too good. For example, a Nightmare has 68 HP, so with +40 HP, it would have a total of 108 HP. That may be reasonable for the mount of a level 13+ Herald, but less so for a level 7 Loremaster Bard. As a DM, I'd be inclined to limit the HP increase for the better mount options. If using a 4th level spell slot, maybe +40 HP If the mount is CR 1 or less, +20 HP if CR 2, or no HP bonus if they are CR 3. To make this rule simpler and more generic, maybe +20 HP per spell slot level above 2nd or above the CR of the mount, so CR 3 creatures get +20 HP with a 4th level slot, and others get +40 HP. Thoughts? Has anyone else used the rare variant of the A5E Find Steed spell and found it worked well, or was sometimes over-powered in your campaign?
