Clearly, Jackson Pollack doesn't invalidate Leanardo Da Vinci, any more than WAR's work has dampened people's love for Dave Trampier's work. But the kind of artwork that is being produced HAS changed, and what fans expect to see in a fantasy work has changed, as well. Whether it's changed for good or ill is a matter of opinion, but clearly works move on. Compare the coves of most SF novels from the 50s, 60s and 70s, for example.
