The metamagic feat doesn't use up a higher level spell slot, but you can only choose 1 energy type each time you take the feat. So my icestorm can be an electricity storm, searing light are electric beams, etc. You could take the feat and choose fire as your energy type instead and then modify all your spells when you prepare them. The nice thing is that you can still prepare a regular fireball or your metamagic version. The changes are not permanent to your spell list</blockquote>
