I really like the way this show shifts the spotlight on different characters from episode to episode. In the last episode (Shindig), River and Book couldn’t have been less involved. I was afraid that, since this is an “ensemble” show, River was simply going to get tossed to the side and forgotten. However in this episode (Safe), vital bits of Simon’s and his sister’s past clearly helps to strengthen their characters, and their relationship. Also an interesting mystery developing with Book. He’s definitely not wanted by the Alliance, but his status is (or was) clearly important. Hmm. I wonder if Joss will leave us hanging on his background the way he did on Rupert (aka Ripper) Giles? It’s also interesting that the crew seems to have a lot more faith in Mal, now. They seemed surprised to his decision to leave, at first, but they didn’t argue. He’s definitely the leader, and in a crisis they turn to him. I don’t know if I’d go so far as call him a “hero” though. On another topic, I’m glad the show has enough of a backstory that they are beginning to show the “Previously on Firefly…” lead-in before the episode begins. But I wish Fox had aired the two-hour pilot. There were bits of the lead-in that I didn’t recognize. As far as the best line of the show… I think that still goes to Kaylee. In a previous episode, as Inara is leaving to meet one of her customers, Kaylee tells her farewell by saying “Have good sex!” The look on Simon’s face was priceless!
