Fireshield & SR

First Post
Hmm yesterday something came up that I couldnt handle after the rules as written. Please if someone knows where to look things up, help!

Our Mulhorandi Tiefling Mage (+Fire Savant) got attacked by an pretty anry DEVA (angel), the Mage was instantly blinded and deafend by the holy word but still managed to throw up his two main defence spells "improved blink" and "fireshield" (stoneskin was allready active).
The Deva kept hitting him. A player mentioned to me that the Deva had to check EVERY TIME for Spell Resistance against the Fireshields damage, as the rules didnt anymore support the "you save once and never have to save again against the same spell" thing.

I was like ??, and quickly looked through the DMG and PHP (3.5). both actually didnt support that...at least from what I understood (so the DEVA had to check for each hit)...is that right?

The main argument brought up was that even though the fireshield is an ongoing effect, the damage it deals isnt. Its like being hit by a new spell everytime you strike the warded creature...(like a retaliative spell or a contingency)

While thinking about it I gave my players right, even tho the Deva's resistance held against the few hits it could land on the mage.

btw: anyone noticed how strong wizards can be in the defence? Most monsters can do :):):):) about it  :D ;) :p

I don't think so. From the SRD page on special abilities:

Effect Spells: Most effect spells summon or create something and are not subject to spell resistance. Sometimes, however, spell resistance applies to effect spells, usually to those that act upon a creature more or less directly, such as web.

Spell resistance can protect a creature from a spell that’s already been cast. Check spell resistance when the creature is first affected by the spell.

Check spell resistance only once for any particular casting of a spell or use of a spell-like ability. If spell resistance fails the first time, it fails each time the creature encounters that same casting of the spell. Likewise, if the spell resistance succeeds the first time, it always succeeds. If the creature has voluntarily lowered its spell resistance and is then subjected to a spell, the creature still has a single chance to resist that spell later, when its spell resistance is up.

What the heck is improved blink?

And I don't think wizards are all that defensive anymore. Most defensive spells have a really short duration, so if you throw up more than one of them, you're wasting time you could be using to blast the enemy to smithereens.

@ Pielorinho

thank you. I didnt see that. I think its still weird.
Anyway it didnt do any harm as the spellresistance of the deva didnt fail.

Improved Blink is a 5th level spell out of the very good regional book for FR called Unapproachable East.
Its basicly the same as Blink but it removes the misschance for your own character. (Enemy's still suffer 50% miss chance)

And yeah the durrations are a lot shorter now, but if the spell is fresh your monster/angels are no very likely to have anything to counter those things. (wich isnt a bad thing either) its just that I noticed it lately very much as there are no monsters that can do anything against a partialy ethereal / stoneskinned / fireshielded mage (sometimes even displaced or in *darkness* too)

I mean the Deva has 3 attacks. The fight went 6 rounds.
3 out of 6 rounds not a single attack hit, because of the blink spell alone :)
And that even tho the mage was blind + deaf and had an AC of 15!
*lol*

Naturally as soon as the effect from the holy word went by (round 6) the mage escaped, knowing for what to prepare next time *gulp* :(
