Cliche? What cliche? :D I'm gonna assume they take the bait I throw em, but no, I won't force em. That 'railroading' word is not needed here. Unless you really want to use it. The setting: parochial town preparing for a winter solstice festival. borders large forest. the party members arrive in town, settle in. In the inn they hear townsfolk wonder where 'the witch' is-- she usually comes into town for All Hallows Eve. Now that she isn't here, they fear that their crops will suffer. Someone bursts into the inn saying that they saw a band of kobolds and wolves heading east towards the river. Other locals worry about the group of farmers coming into town on the east road. pc's can track the raiders to the river ford. The goblins have tied a rope across the road, ride check DC 13 to avoid. Families approach, are ambushed. Party saves day. Back in town, archery contest with the cocky local tough guy using +1 arrows, cheap bastard. As the PC's hang around town, they keep noticing a hawk. The Druid will be able to see a druidic charm on it; it will try to lead them down a trail to an island in a lake, where it's master lives. If they find her journal, they will discover that she had gone to the hills to find a special plant for her solstice ritual. In the hills they discover her lying, bloodied but alive. She says she was ambushed by a strange Goblin shaman and his lackeys. They took a statue she was carrying which is also necessary for her ritual. The creepy thing is that they knew she had it. More tracking, to the strike band's camp. Battle. Shaman escapes. Tracking, to the small tribe's main encampment. Battle, with the women and children begging to be spared. They find that the Shaman, Gu'nuk Lokentarnok, has taken the statue to Glod rock, where he will sit in meditation for one day, then destroy the statue. To Glod rock! Where they fight or reason with: a really big black wolf. then: three goblin warriors, with two more who arrive one round late, hearing the scuffle. finally, the showdown: Gu'nuk summons two tiny monstrous spiders, one small one. His brother, Lvl. 1 rogue, tumbles around with two crude stone axes. Gu'nuk also casts Cause Fear and Ray of Enfeeblement. When the battle starts going against him, he jumps off the edge of the rock to the lake, 80ft. below. He has a featherfall effect.... party members close enough to the edge will get one round of ranged attacks. If he dies, the statue makes him sink. If he lives, he makes it to the nearest shore-- which only has one trail leading up from it. As soon as he makes it to land, he summons his spiders. As the PC's engage, the spiders attack, and Gu'nuk just breaks for it. They find a feather on a cord around his neck and a nice hupak staff that was obviously made by gnomes. Wrap up stuff with the druid being grateful, etc. What do you think?
